Novapolis is a metropolis with different districts, surrounded by a wall with several entrances, with checkpoints – both the military and members of Aegis are present:- The main goal is to pick out infected people, and to keep out fully developed zombies from the city
- Legally, entry guards need to ask the infected person who would like to enter to go away; however, in practice, they are often put down on sight.Districts where the infected live are called the Quarantine Zone, and where healthy people live are the Safe Zones. **VXB-7**, or *Vitrex Extrema*, is a protein-based virus designed to target humans exclusively. It probably got loose from a top-secret laboratory; however, no one took accountability for it.

  Wastelands  

The Wastelands are the areas outside Novapolis and other surviving metroplexes. Years after the outbreak, most towns and cities that were smaller than a metroplex in the States fell, as they weren't important enough for Aegis Enterprise to supply with enough vaccines of the S-Serum.The Wastelands are now ruled mostly by chaos, and mainly by the infected. Abandoned towns and cities are finally reclaimed by nature. Most residents of the Metroplexes believe that the surviving humans out in the wastelands are nothing more than savages. In some cases, that is true; in others, it is not.

The Chompers is a nomadic group that continuously travels around the Great Plains. It's a matriarchal society – a wise elder leads the group who has proven herself throughout her life. They use horses mainly for travelling, and oxen to pull the wagons. 60% percent of the population they produce is immune to the VXB-7 infection.

Three-step initiation to be recognised in their society:
- Taming your first horse (they keep the foals wild)
- Killing your first zombie
- Receiving your first bite (from a zombie)

The Isotope Yobs is a fanatic group in the Wastelands, who follow Jacob McKeena, a disappointed and obsessive ex-operator of a nuclear power plant. He was working for Aegis Enterprise on one of their sites, but he was kicked out when he was conducting dangerous experiments. He is obsessed with nuclear power, oddly in love with it.

He and his followers worship nuclear power and a god named Nucleus, who was made up by McKeena, but he would deny that till the day he died. His followers generally are not highly educated, nor do they have a similar passion for nuclear power if they are educated. They often try to raid Aegis Enterprise sites concerning nuclear power and weaponry. A lot of his followers die due to radiation sickness.

Camp Reverend is the camp of a group of survivors who try to follow the old ways, yet are extremely misogynistic. It's a white male-ruled society, while women are made to be in the exclusive role of raising children, cooking, cleaning, and being available for their husbands sexually whenever they want it. There are arranged marriages at the age of 25, and widowed women are made to be reassigned to another man.

Men in powerful roles are allowed to have multiple wives. Children are also groomed to view these ways as normal—boys are raised to be the "leaders", while girls are raised to be obedient.

His family was poor, his parents having to work two jobs to be able to raise him and her younger sister. Before he graduated from high school, he joined a cartel and sold drugs in hopes of bringing more money home. He was almost knifed one time and caught by the police another, so he decided the gang life wasn't really worth it in the end. He lost a bet when he was 18 and ended up getting his face tattooed like a skull. His mother was horrified initially, but she ended up making peace with it. He ended up enlisting in AEGIS after a rogue zombie bit his father right in front of him. He was 20 at the time.

Henry was born in a small survivor camp on the shores, where survivors mainly got what they needed from the sea. There were a lot of arguments and issues in general, but all hell broke loose after one of the pastors defiled one of his younger followers. The women revolted and decided that they would refuse to bear children if they were not even safe from other survivors, which resulted in the population rapidly falling. When he was old enough to take care of himself, he left with a handful of like-minded people. He vowed that he wouldn't give women as much freedom as they had there, since now it was their responsibility to bring the new generation into this world and win over the infection. He established Camp Reverend when he was 29, and he was the one who made it into a safe haven of respectable people. He took Rose Brooke as his first wife, someone he had found desirable for years. Their relationship wasn't good from the start since Rose fought him every step of the way, but it got even worse when, no matter how hard he tried, she just wouldn't get pregnant with his children.
